The test sends an empty request to well-known ad networks and analytics services and checks whether an answer comes back. When a blocking DNS points these names to 0.0.0.0, the request fails at once.
No cookies are sent and no content is loaded. Ad-blocking extensions in your browser also stop the requests; in that case the result includes your extension's effect.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn on the Colitu ad blocker?
Colitu's DNS-based ad blocker is switched on and off in the apps' settings. See the Ad blocker page for details.
Not everything is blocked. Why?
Your browser's “Secure DNS” setting may bypass the system DNS. Turn it off or set it to automatic in Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
Does it block YouTube ads?
No. YouTube ads come from the same servers as the videos and cannot be told apart at the DNS level.
