VPN for Android TV and Google TV: installing without Google Play

How to install a VPN on your TV with Downloader and a short address, sign in with a QR code and get steady speeds for video.

Android TV and Google TV sets are ordinary Android devices, so the same VpnService as on a phone works there. The difficulty is different: typing addresses and passwords with a remote is painful. Here is the shortest path.

Install in five minutes

  1. On the TV, open Google Play and install the free Downloader app (listed as "Downloader by AFTVnews").
  2. Open Downloader, type colitu.com/tv in the address field and press Go. This short address always leads to the current signed APK.
  3. If the TV asks, allow Downloader to install unknown apps, then press Install.
  4. Open Colitu.

Without Downloader you can use a USB stick: copy the APK from the Colitu for Android TV page and open it in the TV's file manager.

Sign in with a QR code

You do not need to type your e-mail and password with the remote. The TV sign-in screen shows a QR code and a short code:

  1. Scan the QR code with a phone that is already signed in to Colitu (or open the link in a browser).
  2. Approve the sign-in on your phone.
  3. The TV signs in by itself. The code is valid for 10 minutes.

The TV uses one device slot on your plan. You can remove devices you no longer use from the dashboard.

Steady speeds for video

  • Use an Ethernet cable if you can: living-room Wi-Fi often drops because of walls and neighbouring networks.
  • Without a cable, use the 5 GHz band.
  • Pick a server close to you: for video, stability matters more than the country. The servers page shows the approximate latency to each server.
  • 4K needs a steady 25 Mbit/s or more.

Fire TV and other boxes

Fire TV is Android-based and installing with Downloader works the same way. We do not officially test every box, though, so some devices may behave differently.

About streaming services

The catalogues of Netflix, YouTube and others depend on the country, and their terms of use may restrict access through a VPN. Our servers page shows which services open on each server, but whether to use them is up to you and each service's rules.
