VPN for Netflix: catalogues, server checks and honest limits

Why Netflix shows different titles in each country, how Colitu's Netflix check works, how to pick a server with the ✓ tag and what a VPN cannot do for you.

Netflix is not the same service everywhere. Its terms say that the available content varies by geographic location and depends on the rights that studios and distributors grant to Netflix. A film you watched in one country may be missing in another. Netflix also says you may access content primarily in the country where you set up your account. Before using a VPN with Netflix, it helps to know what a VPN changes and what it does not.

When a VPN helps

  • The network blocks streaming. Some offices, dormitories and hotels block video services on their Wi-Fi.
  • A poor route. Your provider's route to Netflix is congested at certain hours, and a different path through a nearby server is steadier.
  • Travel. You are temporarily in another country. Whether Netflix lets you watch, and what you see, still follows Netflix's rules.

Netflix's own rules

  • Account country. Your plan, billing and account country stay the same whatever server you use. Colitu cannot change your account's country.
  • VPN detection. When Netflix decides that a connection comes through a VPN or proxy, it shows the message "You seem to be using a VPN or proxy" (code E106 in its help centre).
  • Plans and events. Netflix says VPNs are not supported for live events or for ad-supported plans.
  • Terms. Read Netflix's current terms of use. How you use your account is your responsibility.

How Colitu checks Netflix

Every Colitu server runs an automatic check every 6 hours from its own exit address. The Netflix check is deliberately strict: it passes only if licensed titles, not just Netflix's own productions, open from that server. A server where only Netflix originals play does not get the tag.

The result appears on the servers page as Netflix ✓, together with the time of the last test. The Streaming category is set automatically from these service checks; for Netflix, look for the Netflix ✓ tag itself. Because the check runs from the server and not from our office, it reflects what Netflix returns to that address. It is still a snapshot: Netflix can change its decision about an address between two checks.

Step by step

  1. Open the servers page and find locations with Netflix ✓. Check the time of the last test.
  2. In the Colitu app, choose one of those locations. Prefer the nearest one: shorter distance usually means steadier video.
  3. Connect and open What is my IP to confirm that sites see the server's country.
  4. Open Netflix. In a browser, a private window avoids old session data.
  5. If titles are missing or the VPN message appears, switch to another location with Netflix ✓.

Watching on a TV or computer

  • Android TV and Google TV. Colitu uses the same APK as on phones, with a TV interface and QR sign-in via colitu.com/tv. It runs as a whole-device VPN, so the Netflix app goes through the tunnel. Fire TV is not officially tested.
  • Windows. Browsers use the system proxy that Colitu sets by default. If a desktop app ignores it, turn on TUN mode so all traffic goes through the tunnel.
  • Apple TV, other smart TVs and game consoles. Colitu has no app for them, and routers are not supported.

If Netflix shows the VPN message or the wrong catalogue

  • Switch to another location with Netflix ✓.
  • Sign out of Netflix and sign in again, or clear the site's cookies.
  • If your browser's Secure DNS uses its own provider, set it to automatic or off. See DNS leak explained.
  • Run the WebRTC leak test: if your real address shows, the service may see two locations.
  • On Windows, use TUN mode.

Before you contact support

If nothing helps, write to support. These details let us check the right server quickly:

  1. the location you connected to and the time;
  2. whether that location showed Netflix ✓ on the servers page at that moment;
  3. the exact message or error code Netflix showed;
  4. your device and how you watch: browser, Android TV app or another app;
  5. whether other locations with Netflix ✓ behave the same way.

Honest limits

  • A ✓ tag is the result of the last check, not a guarantee. Netflix can block an address at any time.
  • The catalogue you see depends on the server's country, as Netflix licenses it there.
  • Picture quality depends on your plan, your device and the route; we do not promise any resolution.
  • Ad-supported plans and live events do not work through a VPN, according to Netflix.

Getting smooth playback

Streaming needs steady throughput more than low latency. Measure your line with the speed test, pick the closest Netflix ✓ location, and on weak Wi-Fi move closer to the router. The app's protocol choice is automatic: where UDP passes, Hysteria2 keeps its pace on lossy links. YouTube Premium is checked the same way; see also VPN for YouTube.
