VPN for ChatGPT: what to know before you connect

Why ChatGPT says it is unavailable in your region, which servers it opens on and which of OpenAI's rules you should keep in mind.

ChatGPT is not available in every country. OpenAI decides the list of supported regions, and when you sign in from an unsupported country the service shows an "unavailable" message. On top of that, some networks — workplaces, universities, hotels — block AI sites themselves.

When a VPN really helps

  • The network blocks the service. You are in a supported country, but the Wi-Fi at work, university or the hotel will not let you reach chatgpt.com.
  • Travel. You are temporarily in a country where the service does not work, but you already have an account and a subscription.
  • A poor route. Your provider routes traffic to OpenAI badly, so the site or voice mode keeps cutting out.

OpenAI's rules matter

OpenAI's terms allow use only from supported countries. If you are in a country that is not on the list, using the service through a VPN may breach its terms, and OpenAI may restrict the account. Read OpenAI's current terms before you use it: it is your responsibility and your account.

Which servers work

Every Colitu server regularly runs an automatic check: does ChatGPT open from this server's network? The result is on the servers page as ChatGPT ✓ and in the AI filter. The check runs from the server itself, not from our office, so it reflects real availability.

Tips:

  1. Pick a server marked ChatGPT ✓ with the lowest latency; latency matters more for voice mode than for text.
  2. Do not switch server countries in the middle of a session: a sudden change of address can trigger a sign-in check.
  3. If the site opens but answers break off, switch to another server with the same mark.

If ChatGPT still does not open

  • Clear the cookies for chatgpt.com or use a private window: the service may remember your previous country.
  • Make sure DNS goes through the VPN: on Windows, turn on TUN mode.
  • Confirm on What is my IP that sites see the server's address, not yours.

Paying for a subscription

Paying for ChatGPT Plus depends on the card's country and OpenAI's rules. A VPN does not change the country of your bank card, so cards from some countries are declined whatever server you use.
